Want to improve your jumps, spins, edges, work on upcoming tests or programs? Our freestyle sessions are just the thing!

Freestyles are dedicated practice sessions for high-level youth and adult figure skaters, at the Pre-Free Skate level or higher. (See usfigureskating.com for a definition of all terms)
On any freestyle session, you can work on jumps, spins, edges, moves in the field, your competition program, upcoming tests…anything at all. You can work with a coach or on your own.
Skaters must follow specific rules for safety, such as designated areas for jumps and spins and proper etiquette for music and collision avoidance.
Hockey players or speed skaters are not permitted on this ice. Rental skates are not available.

For your convenience, we’ve included a Freestyle session flowchart (it’s below),
so you can see where on the ice everyone should be at any given time, based on what they’re practicing.
We hope this has added some clarity to what’s expected of everyone during their time on our freestyle ice. Thanks for your understanding.

Most Important
■ Respect the rights of others.
■ Respect the rink’s property and the property of others.
Here are the Ground Rules
■ Coaching by parents from the bleachers or door to the rink is not allowed.
■ Player benches are only to be used by skaters and coaches.
■ If skaters must talk to someone off the ice, they need to get off the ice to do so
■ If you must talk to other skaters on the ice, please be brief. You should be practicing, not wasting time.
■ Skaters shouldn’t be coaching other skaters.
■ No back spirals or other elements that don’t allow you to look behind you, unless you’re working
with a coach.
■ It is important for everyone’s safety that all skaters be aware of other skaters on the ice.
Try to anticipate their patterns as you decide your own.
■ If you are a less experienced skater, please be extra careful to stay aware of other skaters and to look
ahead to where you are skating to see what others are doing or are about to do.
■ If you are an experienced skater, please be patient with less experienced skaters. Remember, you were
new to freestyles at one time, too.
■ Please be understanding if someone gets in your way. Remember to look both ways before leaving the
boards or skating across the ice. Keep moving while on the ice, as it is dangerous for both you and
other skaters to stand still during a session. It is especially important not to stop in the middle of the ice.
■ A skater doing a routine to music has the right of way.
■ Program music will be played on a rotational basis, on the honor system, with the responsibility left to
skaters and coaches.
■ Not everyone will be able to play their music on full sessions due to lengths of programs.
■ Skaters taking a lesson have the right of way over other skaters.
■ Kicking, digging holes, scraping or stomping the ice with your blades and kicking the railings are not
allowed.
■ Deliberately challenging, scaring or intentionally blocking another skater is not allowed.
■ Please stay aware of which skater is doing his or her routine and do your best to stay clear of
his or her pattern.
■ Being verbally abusive to other skaters or coaches is prohibited. Any skater engaging in this
behavior will be asked to leave the session immediately.
■ Any skater engaging in this behavior will be asked to leave the ice immediately for an indefinite
period of time.
Private lessons are designed to improve skills at any level and enhance your skating experience.
Lefrak Center at Lakeside employs two tiers of coaches, Senior Staff and Junior Staff. Both tiers are available for private (one skater/one coach) or semi-private (two skaters/one coach) lessons.
Senior Staff Coaches are always available for private or semi-private lessons. These lessons can take place during our General Skating or Freestyle sessions, depending on your skating level and the skills you want to work on.
To arrange for a private lesson with a Senior Staff Coach, please complete our Private Lesson Request Form. This form is submitted to our Skating Director, who will connect you with a member of our Senior coaching staff. You can expect a response within 72 hours of your request. Please note that Senior Staff Coaches determine their own fees.
Junior Staff Coaches are also available for lessons, but these lessons must be arranged with the Skating Director and are introductory lessons only. Junior Staff Coaches are permitted to teach a maximum of three lessons with any student. These lessons must be paid for and tracked at our Cashier Stations.
When you come to the rink for your lesson, we will ask for your name, your coach’s name, and the number of lessons you’ve taken.
After the third lesson, you will be given the opportunity to continue your private lessons with a Senior Coach. Please consult with the Skating Director for assistance.
You may also work with a non-staff coach or Guest Coach. Guest Coaches are welcome to teach during weekday freestyle sessions only, for a fee equivalent to the cost of the ice time of any given session.
Guest coaches must sign our Guest Coach Agreement and provide all required documentation to be permitted to teach on a freestyle session.
Without proper documentation on file at the rink, a Guest Coach cannot teach under any circumstances. Please make sure your Guest Coach’s paperwork is on file before you purchase admission.
Coaching, teaching or instruction or any nature is not permitted except as authorized by rink management, whether or not the coach, teacher or instructor receives remuneration.
For more information about Private Lessons, please refer to the Private Lesson page on our website.
Missed activities, reservations or sessions of any kind cannot be transferred to another session, rescheduled, credited or refunded for any reason (including due to COVID-19 and/or quarantining) unless cancelled by LeFrak Center at Lakeside. Your registration or purchase guarantees you a space in the session regardless of your attendance.
Please be sure of your purchase. We do not offer credits, transfers or refunds for any reason. No exceptions.
Management reserves the right to refuse admission to anyone for any reason.
All pay-as-you-go programs require online pre-registration before you arrive at the rink.
